At 61 North Environmental, our team has decades of experience in marine science programs, fisheries management, wildlife sciences, environmental compliance and permitting management as well as data management and programming expertise.

In addition to our core group of project managers/senior advisory staff, we have a deep bench of protected species observers/field biologists on hand for projects across Alaska and the Lower 48.

  • Chief Executive Officer

Melanie has more than 25 years of experience in biological sciences in Alaska and the Lower 48. She started her field studies career in Alaska in the Upper Cook Inlet helping to capture and tag Cook Inlet Beluga Whales (CIBW), and annual aerial abundance estimate surveys of the CIBW for the National Marine Fisheries Service. She was a member of the Chukchi Sea Environmental Studies Program collecting baseline marine mammal abundance and behavioral data and later became a data manager for that effort. Further, Melanie has over 7 years of experience as a fisheries observer for at-sea monitoring programs in Alaska. In addition to her passion for field research, she is a GIS specialist and has experience as a data manager supporting North Slope oil and gas clients and international commercial fisheries monitoring programs. She is also an experienced protected species observer; skilled at hiring and managing staff in the field and implementing mitigation and compliance programs.

  • Chief Scientific Officer

John began his Alaskan wildlife career in 1992 while at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He has over 28 years of experience collaborating with private, federal, and state entities designing and conducting surveys of birds and mammals in Alaska, often with a focus on species that are protected, threatened, or endangered. Much of his work has been with the energy sector including oil and gas, wind, and hydroelectric. He has performed studies throughout the corners of Alaska in both terrestrial and marine biological studies including waterfowl, raptor, song bird, shorebird, seabird and mammal investigations. John has conducted extensive surveys for raptors, endangered eiders and waterfowl, performed waterfowl capture, and migration research as well as eagle permitting support (Eagle Conservation Plans), collision risk modeling, and fatality monitoring. In addition to ornithological studies, John has participated in small-mammal trapping, caribou surveys, marine mammal surveys and remote-camera monitoring, and fox-den monitoring. John’s skills include aerial, ground and boat-based survey techniques, GPS/GIS technology, radar ornithology, behavioral/disturbance monitoring, wildlife capture and marking, video, still and time-lapse photography, prey analyses, database creation, data analysis and reporting. John has over 26 years of leading crews and 18 years of project management experience. Additionally, he was a principal shareholder and on the Board of Directors of his former employer.

Drew has 20 years of experience in biological sciences in Alaska, and more than 10 years of experience in environmental compliance, planning, and permitting. For commercial oil and gas clients he has been the non-federal designee for Section 7 endangered species consultations with NMFS and USFWS and drafted biological assessments and IHA applications for these projects. He's authored marine mammal monitoring and mitigation plans for onshore and offshore work, and 90-day post-project reports for IHA and LOC compliance. Meeting aggressive schedules for commercial clients, he's obtained major environmental permits including Section 10/404 permits, wastewater discharge permits, CAA air quality minor/ORL permits, and other minor permits and managed ongoing compliance. He has developed excellent working relationships with regulators at ADEC, USACE, and local and national NMFS offices. He has been the technical lead and/or project manager on more than ten marine mammal monitoring programs, including six seasons at the Port of Alaska. He has experience providing planning, analytical soil and water sampling, and technical support for contaminated site investigations for commercial and DOD clients and is an ADEC Qualified Environmental Professional for contaminated sites work.
